The Next Episode
February 3rd, 2008This year’s US presidential election is already quite interesting. On one side of the isle we have two minorities from which to choose a nominee, and on the other sit four conservatives who keep calling each other liberal. What a world.
They say every election is between a turd sandwich and a giant douche. I don’t know whether that’s quite true, but recently there does seem to have been a pattern of having to pick the lesser of two evils when it comes to presidential elections. Call me naive, but it seems to me that this year we’re in much better shape. In fact, I’m feeling so optimistic that I’m going to predict what happens between now and November 4th, 2008.
First off, Barack Obama will win the Democratic ticket, after a fairly tight race with Hillary Clinton. After a largely “friendly” campaign he will choose either her or John Edwards as his running mate, the latter being more likely as Obama keeps referring to their similarities during the debates. Clinton will be a reasonable choice since she seems well liked by enough people and won’t have an overly negative image to deal with due to the previously mentioned friendly tone of this year’s campaign.
On the Republican side we will have John McCain, with the second-place candidate as his running mate, which at this time (2/3) seems to be Mitt Romney. The race won’t be quite as tight as the Democratic, but the results won’t be completely obvious until near the very end.
The grand prize will go to Obama in a race almost as tight as the past two, and hopefully without any scandals this time around.
Now, what do I want to happen? I’d like to see Obama win with Hillary, as I think they would make a good team and actually get things done. I wouldn’t mind him going against McCain, since I find him to be the least insane of the Republican candidates (save perhaps for Ron Paul, who is fantastic at pointing out what’s wrong with America today but fails miserably at coming up with viable solutions), which would make losing less painful, but part of me wants an outrageous Republican pair to assist the Democrats in winning. I am very distrustful of the Republican party.
All that said, I think each of the currently active six candidates from the two major parties will do an immensely better job than George Bush. In fact, I think only Rudy Giuliani and Fred Thompson could possibly be worse, and they’ve both left the race.
It will be a good year, I think.
